THE FIRST LINE
Having dreams was great, but as Eva LaVette had learned the hard way, life rarely follows a script.
As I work on the first sentence of my radio novel, I’m thinking my editor will probably cut it. First lines should hook the reader, invoke emotions, evoke the senses, define the author’s writing voice and give the reader a promise of what’s to come—or at least one of those things. Easy to say…
For my first entry here on Substack, I’d like to be witty, charming and captivating. But as the template for Substack itself says “A blinking cursor on a fresh blank page can be intimidating for even seasoned writers” and instructs me to start with the Why.
What brought me here is my publisher, Fresh Water Press, who has moved their newsletter to this platform, and also my local writing group, a few members of which have serialized their novels.
I can’t see myself ever charging readers, but perhaps regular posts here will lead me into a community of people who love radio, writing, music and photography.
Stay tuned!
